GW3 Chip Strategy: Is This Haaland’s Triple Captain Week, or Time to Wait?
Two gameweeks in, most squads still have all four chips sitting untouched. That’s normal this early, but Gameweek 3 is the first week where the fixture list actually tempts a move: a stacked, promoted-heavy card up top and a genuine Wildcard argument building underneath. Here’s the case for and against pulling a trigger this week, chip by chip.
Chips aren’t points. They’re multipliers on work your squad is already doing. The wrong week wastes them just as fast as never using them at all.
CHIPS REMAINING, SET ONE
Wildcard: available, deadline to use is Gameweek 19
Free Hit: available
Bench Boost: available
Triple Captain: available
Only one chip can be played per gameweek. All four reset for the second half of the season.
Triple Captain: The Live Decision This Week
This is the chip actually worth playing in Gameweek 3. Erling Haaland is at home to a Coventry side without a point or a goal after two matches, and projections have him at 7.0 points before multiplication, 21 with the chip attached. He’s played every minute so far and leads the league for shots in the box. More than 83,000 managers already spent a Triple Captain on his Gameweek 2 haul against Crystal Palace, and by most measures this fixture is stronger. Full reasoning is in this week’s Captain Recommendations, but the short version: if the chip is unused, this is close to the best early-season window it’ll get.
Wildcard: Gameweek 3 or Wait for Gameweek 4?
There’s a real split here. The case for firing early is Gameweek 3’s fixture list itself: Arsenal host Chelsea, Man City host Coventry, Brentford host Sunderland and Liverpool travel to Ipswich, all in the same week, which lets a rebuilt squad attack all of it at once. The stronger case is patience. Fixture difficulty and early-season form don’t settle until roughly six gameweeks in, so an early Wildcard spends information the squad doesn’t have yet. Gameweek 4 is emerging as the consensus first-Wildcard window, a post-international-break reset once City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have all shown a clearer hand. Unless the squad has a specific structural problem right now, patience is the better default.
Bench Boost: Not Yet
Bench Boost only pays out when all four bench players are nailed starters with a fixture, and most squads two gameweeks in still carry at least one bench spot that doesn’t clear that bar. The natural pairing is straight after a Wildcard rebuild, which points to Gameweek 5 for anyone planning to Wildcard in Gameweek 4. Building toward that now, rather than forcing the chip on a patchy bench this week, is the better use of the transfer budget.
Free Hit: Save It
Free Hit is a one-week rescue chip, built for a blank gameweek or a week where half a squad has no fixture at all. Gameweek 3’s slate is unusually strong, which is exactly why it doesn’t need rescuing. Spending Free Hit on a good week rather than a broken one is the single most common chip-timing mistake, and there’s no shortage of Gameweek 3 upside available without it.
The Call
Play now: Triple Captain, Erling Haaland vs Coventry City
Hold: Wildcard, target Gameweek 4
Hold: Bench Boost, target Gameweek 5
Don’t touch: Free Hit, save for a genuine blank or double
Deadline is 18:30 BST on Friday, 4 September. A chip decision made under deadline pressure is usually the wrong one, so settle this before Friday afternoon, not during it.
