GW4 Chip Strategy: Why the Real Wildcard Call Is Gameweek 5 vs 6
Three gameweeks in, most chips are still sitting untouched, and Gameweek 4 doesn’t change that calculus much on its own. What does change it is the calendar: the Premier League plays through Gameweek 5 on 20 September, then pauses for a merged two-week international break before Gameweek 6 resumes on 10 October. That gap is now close enough to start shaping every chip decision from here, this week included.
The best chip weeks are obvious in hindsight. The skill is recognising when this isn’t one of them.
CHIPS REMAINING, SET ONE
Wildcard: available, deadline to use is Gameweek 19
Free Hit: available
Bench Boost: available
Triple Captain: available
Only one chip can be played per gameweek. All four reset for the second half of the season.
Triple Captain: Not This Week
Gameweek 3 had a clean case in Erling Haaland at home to Coventry. Gameweek 4 doesn’t hand over anything close to that. Haaland’s fixture list sends City to Old Trafford for the Manchester derby, a considerably tougher away test than another promoted side at the Etihad, and this week’s strongest fixture (Chelsea at home to Hull) belongs to Cole Palmer, who doesn’t carry the same nailed-on multiplier ceiling a City striker does. Full reasoning on both is in this week’s Captain Recommendations. Worth holding for a week where fixture and form point the same direction this cleanly again.
Wildcard: The Real Decision Is Gameweek 5 vs Gameweek 6
Three gameweeks of data is still thin, and Gameweek 4 alone isn’t the trigger. The calendar is what matters now. The season pauses after Gameweek 5 on 20 September for a merged, two-week international break, with Gameweek 6 not returning until 10 October. That creates two real Wildcard windows rather than one. Fire it before Gameweek 5 and a rebuilt squad sits through the entire break banking free hits on price changes and returning from international duty in form. Wait until Gameweek 6 and the Wildcard is informed by everything the break reveals: injuries picked up on international duty, players rested or overplayed, and a settled look at Gameweek 6 fixtures before committing. Neither is wrong. The mistake would be using it now, a week early, on a squad that’s had only three matches to prove itself.
The Two Windows
Gameweek 5 Wildcard: locks in a squad before the break, avoids the price-change drift that happens over two idle weeks.
Gameweek 6 Wildcard: waits for full international-break team news before committing, a squad built on more current information.
Gameweek 4 itself: too early either way. Let the squad play one more week first.
Bench Boost: Still Not Yet
Bench Boost only pays out when all four bench players are nailed starters with a fixture, and a squad that hasn’t Wildcarded yet almost never clears that bar. The natural pairing is still straight after a Wildcard rebuild, which now points to Gameweek 6 or 7 depending on which of the two Wildcard windows above gets used. Keep building toward that rather than forcing it onto a patchy bench this week.
Free Hit: Save It
Free Hit is a one-week rescue chip for a blank gameweek or a week with a genuine fixture pile-up, and Gameweek 4’s slate is a normal ten-fixture round. There’s no rescuing to do. The international break itself doesn’t need one either, since there’s no Premier League football to Free Hit into during those two weeks. Keep saving it for a real blank or double later in the season.
The Call
Hold: Triple Captain, no fixture this week matches Gameweek 3’s Haaland-Coventry ceiling
Hold: Wildcard, decide between Gameweek 5 (pre-break) and Gameweek 6 (post-break) over the next fortnight
Hold: Bench Boost, pair it with whichever Wildcard window gets used
Don’t touch: Free Hit, save for a genuine blank or double
Deadline is 13:30 BST on Saturday, 12 September. No chip decision is urgent this week, which is itself the decision: use the extra time to get the Gameweek 5 vs Gameweek 6 Wildcard call right rather than rushing either one.
