Gameweek 2 Differential Picks: The Template Already Blanked Once

The template had a rough opening week. Of the twelve most-owned players in the game, only three delivered a return in Gameweek 1. The other nine blanked. If there was ever a moment to look past the ownership charts, this is it.

Two or three differentials is brave. A squad full of them isn’t brave, it’s noise.

Yoane Wissa (2.8% owned)

Newcastle’s forward looked sharp in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool and the underlying numbers back up the eye test. Form, fixture and a rock-bottom ownership figure rarely line up this cleanly. If the goal is separating your rank from the pack rather than matching it, this is the low-effort way to do it.

The Arsenal Pick Nobody’s Talking About

Riccardo Calafiori posted the second-highest expected goal involvement of any Arsenal player in Gameweek 1, behind only Saka, and sits at just over 6% ownership. He gets access to Arsenal’s clean-sheet potential as a floor and genuine attacking output as a ceiling, which is a rare combination at his price. Ben White, filling in at right-back for the injured Jurrien Timber, also chipped in an assist and is worth a look for the same reasons.

De Cuyper: The Differential That Won’t Stay One

Brighton’s left-back posted the best expected points total of any defender in the league in Gameweek 1, playing as an advanced left winger rather than a conventional full-back, and nearly 250,000 managers have already moved to bring him in. He’s arguably too popular to call a true differential by the time this goes to print, but the underlying role is the real story: a defender getting winger minutes and a winger’s numbers. Worth having before the price reflects it, if it hasn’t already.

Two for the Watchlist

Brentford’s Kevin Schade (3.3% owned) and Brighton’s Luka Vuskovic (2.7% owned) both carry top-40 projections on minimal ownership. Neither is essential this week, but both are the kind of name worth remembering before the rest of the league catches up.

Pick two or three, not five. The point of a differential is that it separates your team from the pack. Load up on them and you’ve just built a different template, with the same risk of blanking all at once.
